Lady Red Hawks finish Cal Baptist Tourney with a win

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Simpson University's women's softball team finished the California Baptist tournament with a 5-3 win against Southern Oregon University on Saturday, Feb. 19. This was the third time these two teams faced each other in the tournament. Southern Oregon won on day one, and Simpson won on day two and three.
The Lady Red Hawks took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second when junior Corine Alexander hit a solo home run. Southern Oregon tied the game at one in the bottom of the third. Simpson had a solid sixth inning. The Lady Red Hawks scored four runs to take the 5-1 lead. Sophomore Morgan Davis scored on junior Nicki Feuerbach's single down the right field line. Freshman Chelsea Dunn's double brought home freshman Shaley Madruga and Feuerbach. Dunn scored Simpson's last run of the inning by scoring an unearned run. Southern Oregon scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough to keep the Lady Red Hawks from winning 5-3.
Sophomore Hayley Rodriguez was the winning pitcher for Simpson. She pitched all seven innings and allowed eight hits and three runs. Sixty-nine of her 92 pitches were strikes.
Simpson went 3-2 in the Cal Baptist Tournament. On day one, they lost to Southern Oregon and defeated Davenport College. On day two, they lost to host Cal Baptist and defeated Southern Oregon. On day three, they defeated Southern Oregon again. The Lady Red Hawks' overall record is 7-8.
Simpson returns to action in the Southern Oregon Tournament on Feb. 24-26 in Medford, Ore.
