Simpson improves conference record to 5-1 against Menlo

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University's women's softball team played a conference match up against Menlo College on Saturday, April 9 in Redding, Calif. The Lady Red Hawks swept the two game series. They won game one 9-1 and game two 7-1.

In game one, Menlo took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Simpson took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the second. Junior Nicki Feuerbach scored on junior Corrine Alexander's single to center field. Freshman Kristen Deal, junior Valerie Rodriguez, and Alexander all reached home on Menlo errors. In the bottom of the third, the Lady Red Hawks added two runs to their total (6-1) when Deal and Alexander scored on sophomore Morgan Davis' single to right. In the bottom of the fifth, Alexander reached home on Davis' sacrifice fly. Freshman Chelsea Dunn scored on freshman Alexis Angier's triple to right. Deal gave Simpson a 9-1 lead in the bottom, of the sixth by hitting a solo home run.

Sophomore Hayley Rodriguez was the winning pitcher. She pitched all six innings and only allowed three hits and one run.

In game two, Menlo once again took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but Simpson tied the game in the bottom of the inning when junior Brooke Downs hit a solo home run. Downs scored her second run of the game in the bottom of the third on a Menlo error. Freshman McKenzie Burroughs scored when junior Paige Gomez grounded out to bring the score to 3-1. Dunn reached home on a Menlo error in the bottom of the fifth to add another run to the Lady Red Hawks' lead. In the bottom of the sixth, Rodriguez reached home on freshman Shayley Madruga's single to right. Feuerbach scored on a Menlo error. Madruga brought Simpson's lead to 7-1 when she scored on Angier grounded out.

Freshman Whitney McCain was the winning pitcher. She pitched two innings and gave up two hits and one run. Junior Amanda Crocker and Davis also pitched.

Simpson returns to action in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 12 against conference rival William Jessup University in Redding, Calif. The first pitch is set for 2 p.m.
