Lady Red Hawks upset No. 1 William Jessup

ROCKLIN, Calif. - Simpson University's women's softball team faced off against No. 1 seed and conference rival William Jessup University in round two of the NAIA Qualifying Tournament on Friday, April 29 in Rocklin, Calif. The No. 2 Lady Red Hawks won 4-3 in extra innings.
William Jessup took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth. Simpson tied the game in the bottom of the inning when junior Nicki Feuerbach scored on a William Jessup misplayed grounder. The Warriors scored two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. Simpson once again tied the game. In the bottom of the sixth inning, freshman Shayley Madruga hit a two-run homer to bring herself and junior Paige Gomez home. The game remained tied until the bottom of the ninths when Simpson freshman Chelsea Dunn hit a two-out single to left. This hit allowed sophomore Morgan Davis to score. The Lady Red Hawks won 4-3.
Sophomore Hayley Rodriguez picked up her second win of the tournament. She pitched 4.2 innings and only allowed four hits. She didn't give up any runs and had five strikeouts. Junior Amanda Crocker started the game. She pitched 4.1 innings an allowed six hits and three runs. She had two strikeouts.
Simpson will either face No. 3 University of Great Falls or William Jessup in the championship game at 4 p.m. University of Great Falls and William Jessup will play an elimination game at 2 p.m. to see which team advances to the championship game. Whichever team wins the elimination game will have to defeat Simpson twice in order to advance to the NAIA National Tournament.
