Simpson advances to NAIA National Tourney

ROCKLIN, Calif. - Simpson University's women's softball team advanced to the NAIA Softball National Championship for the first time in school history with a 13-2 win over William Jessup in the NAIA West Regional Championship game on Saturday, April 30 in Rocklin, Calif.
The Lady Red Hawks dominated the game from the beginning. They scored at least one run in each of the game's five innings. In the first inning, Simpson took a 4-0 lead. Junior Nicki Feuerbach's double brought in sophomore Nicole Hutchins and junior Brooke Downs. Junior Valerie Rodriguez's single to the shortstop drove in freshman Chelsea Dunn. Feuerbach scored on a William Jessup missed catch.
Simpson took a 6-0 in the top of the second. Downs hit a two-run homer which allowed herself and Hutchins to score. In the third inning the juniors Corrine Alexander and Paige Gomez each scored solo home runs to increase the Lady Red Hawks' lead to 8-0. William Jessup scored in the bottom of the inning. In the fourth, Simpson took a 9-1 lead when Hutchins scored her third run of the game on Feuerbach's single to left.
The Lady Red Hawks took a 13-1 lead in the top of the ninth inning. Alexander and Gomez scored on sophomore Morgan Davis' single to left. Freshman Alexis Angier and Davis reached home on Downs' single to left. The Warriors scored in the bottom of the inning to bring the final score to 13-2.
Sophomore Hayley Rodriguez picked up her third win of the tournament. She pitched five innings and only allowed three hits and two runs.
The No. 2 Lady Red Hawks won the championship by winning all three games they played in. In game one, Simpson defeated No. 3 University of Great Falls 7-0. In game two, Simpson defeated No. 1 William Jessup University 4-3 in extra innings. They played William Jessup again in game three and won 13-2.
Simpson returns to action in the NAIA National Championship Tournament on Thursday, May 19 in Golf Shores, Ala.
