Simpson finishes tournament with a record of 4-3

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University's women's softball team had a strong outing on day two of the second annual Simpson University softball tournament. They went 2-1 on day two. On day one, the Lady Red Hawks went 2-2. They lost to Concordia-Irvine and the University of British Columbia and defeated Northwest Christian and Corban. On day two of tournament play, Simpson faced the University of Concordia-Portland, the College of Idaho, and Corban College. They lost 5-4 to Concordia-Portland and beat College of Idaho and Corban.
Simpson started off day two play against the University of Concordia-Portland. This game was a battle for both teams and ended in a heart-breaking 5-4 loss for the Lady Red Hawks. This game was tied at four at the end of the seventh inning, so the game went into extra innings. Concordia-Portland scored in the bottom of the eighth, and Simpson was unable to rally in the top of the ninth. The Cavaliers went home with the 5-4 victory.
Morgan Davis was the losing pitcher for Simpson. She pitched 3.1 innings and gave up two hits and one run. Davis had a strong game at the plate. She went 1-for-two with two runs and one RBI. Freshman Shaley Madruga went 1-for-4 with one run and two RBI.
The Lady Red Hawks played the College of Idaho in game two. Simpson was able to come away with the 7-2 victory.
Simpson scored in the bottom of the first inning to take the 1-0 lead. Junior Brooke Downs scored on freshman McKenzie Burroughs' single to center. The Lady Red Hawks had an explosive third inning. They scored five runs to take the 6-0 lead. Sophomore Bryanna Esquivel scored and a Burroughs single to right. Junior Valerie Rodriguez scored when junior Nicki Feuerbach was walked. Downs and Burroughs both scored when the College of Idaho misplayed freshman Alexis Angier's grounder. Feuerbach scored when junior Paige Gomez grounded out. College of Idaho scored two runs in the top of the fourth to bring the score to 6-2. Simpson scored in the bottom of the fifth when Downs scored on a College of Idaho wild throw. The Lady Red Hawks won 7-2.
Sophomore Hayley Rodriguez was the winning pitcher. She pitched all seven innings and gave up five hits and two runs. This was her second win of the tournament.
Simpson faced Corban University for the second time in tournament play in their last game of the tournament. The Lady Red Hawks shut-out the Lady Warriors 3-0.
Simpson scored runs in the first, third, and fifth innings. Davis scored in the first off a Burroughs single to left. Downs scored in the third when Feuerbach hit into a double play. Downs scored again in the fifth when Feuerbach hit a single to center field. Freshman Whitney McCain was the winning pitcher. She pitched all seven innings and allowed three hits and no runs. This was her second win of the tournament.
The Lady Red Hawks return to action on Monday, Feb. 14 in a double-header against the University of Concordia-Irvine in Irvine, Calif. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
