Simpson loses doubleheader to conference rival

ROCKLIN, Calif. - Simpson University's women's softball team faced conference rival William Jessup University for the second time in a week on Saturday, April 16 in Rocklin, Calif. The Lady Warriors were able to pull out victories in both games. In game one, William Jessup defeated Simpson 8-7. The Lady Red Hawks were shut out in game two 10-0. With these wins, William Jessup clinched the No. 1 seed in the California Pacific Conference Tournament on April 29-30.
Game one was a back-and-forth battle to the very end. Simpson jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on junior Nicki Feuerbach's RBI single to center and freshman Shaley Madruga's sacrifice fly to center field. William Jessup answered back with two runs in the bottom of the first.
The Red Hawks took a 3-2 lead in the top of third inning on junior Corinne Alexander's sacrifice fly. The Warriors' Heidi Louber had an RBI double to left in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game at 3-3.
Brooke Downs put Simpson up 4-3 in the fourth with a solo home run to center. Once again the Warriors answered as Erin Houston was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Jode Johnson.
Simpson kept up the scoring in the fifth inning. Feuerbach and Alexander both scored on a Warriors error. The Red Hawks would add another run in the top of the seventh to take the 7-4 lead when junior Valerie Rodriguez reached home on sophomore Nicole Hutchins single to right.
The Warriors rallied in the bottom of the seventh by scoring four runs to earn the 8-7 victory.
After an exciting first game, the Warriors exploded in game two by scoring 10 runs. The Lady Red Hawks were unable to get on the board and were shut out.
Simpson returns to action on Tuesday, April 19 in a doubleheader against Bethany University.
