Lady Red Hawks split doubleheader with conference rival

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University's women's softball team played conference rival William Jessup University in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 12. The two teams split the series, winning one game each. William Jessup won game one 5-2. The Lady Red Hawks won game two 9-4.

In game one, Simpson took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when junior Brooke Downs scored on a sacrifice fly by Nikki Feuerbach. The Lady Red Hawks went up 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth when sophomore Morgan Davis scored on a double hit by sophomore Nicole Hutchins. William Jessup mounted a comeback and scored two runs in the sixth and three runs in the seventh to seal the victory 5-2.

Hutchins went 2-for-4 from the plate with a RBI, and freshmen Chelsea Dunn and Shaley Madruga each went 2-for-3 from the plate. Feuerbach recorded a RBI. Sophomore Hayley Rodriguez picked up the loss. Rodriguez pitched seven innings and allowed seven hits and five runs. She struck out six batters.

William Jessup was led by Samantha McMahan with three RBIs and was 2-for-4 from the plate with a home run. Heidi Louber hit a home run and was 1-for-2 from the plate with a RBI.

In game two, William Jessup got off to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, when Jessup's McMahan hit a single to right bringing home Mallory Blodgett and Jode Johnson.

The Lady Warriors went up 4-0 in the fourth on a fielder's choice by Jacki Tuman which allowed Cassie Emerson to score and a single by Blodgett brought home Tuman.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Red Hawks exploded and scored five runs. Simpson's run started with a single hit to center by junior Valerie Rodriguez which allowed Feuerbach to score. A double hit by Davis allowed junior Corinne Alexander and Rodriguez to reach home. Later in the inning, Downs hit a double to center bringing Davis home. Junior Paige Gomez hit a double which allowed freshman Alexis Angier to score for a 5-4 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Simpson sealed the victory by scoring four runs. Angier hit a home run to center for a 6-4 lead. Feuerbach reached base on William Jessup missed catch which allowed Downs and Gomez to score for a 8-4 lead. Madruga hit a single to right brought Feuerbach home for the 9-4 victory.

Downs once again had a great game going 3-for-4 from the plate with one RBI and one run. Angier went 2-for-2 from the plate with a home run, two runs and a RBI. Gomez, Rodriguez, and Madruga each had a RBI. Davis and Feuerbach each had two RBIs. Davis earned the win for the Lady Red Hawks, and junior Amanda Crocker picked up the save.

Simpson returns to action on Thursday, April 14 against conference opponent Menlo College. The doubleheader will be played in Atherton, Calif. The first pitch is set for 2 p.m. The Lady Red Hawks won both games the last time these two teams met on Saturday, April 9.
