Red Hawks lose to Holy Names for first conference loss of the season

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University's women's volleyball team was in action on Saturday, Oct. 1 trying to extend their win streak to three as they hosted the Hawks from Holy Names University. It was a close match, but the Red Hawks lost in three straight sets (25-19,27-25,25-15).
The Red Hawks kept it close for the majority of the first set with some great play from Cashel White and Kirsten Duren. However, they were unable to hold off the Hawks who took the set 25-19 behind the strong play of Rachel Vartanian. In the second set, Holy Names jumped out to an early 11-6 lead before Jamie Pickett lead the team on a 5-0 run with her outstanding serving to level the set at 11-11. The rest of the set was contested quite closely and the Red Hawks were able to fend off two set points before eventually folding on the third set point that they faced dropping the set 27-25. After that it seemed like the wind was taken out of the sails of the Red Hawks and Holy Names would take advantage cruising to a 25-15 win in the third set.
Top performers for the Red Hawks included Duren who would finish the night with nine kills and 14 assists, Kelly Tycksen who had 13 assists, Pickett who had eight kills and Lauren Godinet who had 15 digs. Holy Names was led by Vartanian who had 10 kills, and Miranda Rodriguez who finished the night with 17 assists.
The loss drops the Red Hawks record to 6-15 on the season and 2-1 in the Cal Pac. They will next be in action on Friday, Oct. 7 against the Warriors from William Jessup University in Rocklin, Calif. The match will start at 5 p.m.
