Red Hawks lose five set match to Menlo

REDDING, Calif. - The Red Hawk volleyball team started the second half of conference play on Saturday, Oct. 15 when they hosted the Oaks from Menlo College. They lost the closely contested match in five sets (20-25, 25-20, 27-25, 14-25, 10-15).
The Red Hawks started the first match off slow and the Oaks jumped out to an early lead. The Red Hawks finally pulled it together in the set, but Menlo won the set. The second set was closely contested as both teams kept it close. The Red Hawks capitalized on a service error by the Oaks to win the set. The Red Hawks would then use that momentum in the third set and jumped out to a lead in the set. However, the Oaks fought back and forced the Red Hawks to dig deep, and they did pulling out the set 27-25. In the forth set it seemed like the Red Hawks took their foot off the gas for just a second and the Oaks punished them for it cruising to an easy victory in the set. The fifth and final set was another tight affair as the Red Hawks went down early in the set 7-2 and came back to tie it at 8 before eventually falling 15-10.
The Red Hawks had a great performances out of Jamie Pickett who had 12 kills, Kirsten Duren who had 11 kills and 17 assists, Kelly Tycksen who had 20 assists, and Cashel White who had 11 kills in the losing effort. The Oaks were led by Amanda Sutter who had 14 kills.
The heartbreaking loss drops the Red Hawks record to 8-16 on the season and to 4-2 in the conference. The 4-2 mark puts the Red Hawks and the Oaks in a tie for second place in the Cal Pac behind still undefeated Hawks from Holy Names. Up next for the Red Hawks will be a chance to sweep the conference series from the Bobcats from UC Merced in Merced, Calif., on Saturday, Oct. 22. The match is set to start at 7 p.m.
