Simpson overcomes first half struggles to beat Bethany

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University's women's basketball team took on the visiting Bethany University Bruins on Saturday, Jan. 22 at the Heritage Student Life Center. The Lady Red Hawks defeated Bethany 68-43.

Both teams struggled offensively in the first half. The Lady Red Hawks shot 10 percent from three-point line and 31 percent from the field, scoring only 29 points. Defensively Simpson fared better. The Lady Red Hawks held the Bruins to only 16 points in the half and held them to 25 percent from the field and 20 from three-point line.

In the second half, Simpson continued with their defensive pressure. The Lady Red Hawks forced 10 turnovers in the half and held Bethany to 29 percent shooting from the field. Simpson also picked it up offensively and shot 56 percent from the field and 45 percent from three-point line. Senior Kylie Shaw led the offensive charge scoring 12 of her 14 points in second half. She shot 100 percent from both the field goal and three-point line.

Freshman Nichole Jones led Simpson with 16 points and five steals. Shaw followed with 14 points and five assists, while freshman Bekah Wofford contributed with 10 points and five assists.

Bethany was led by Christie O'Daniels, who had nine points and four assists.

Simpson returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 27 against Menlo College at the Heritage Student Life Center. Tip-off is at 5:30 p.m.
