SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Red Hawks women's basketball team took to the court on Friday in the Griffin Classic with hopes of getting back into the win column after a cruel defeat the night before. Their opponent on this night was the Skylights from Montana State University-Northern who were unable to stop the Red Hawks from securing the one point victory (67-66).
In the first half, the Red Hawks played some outstanding basketball, putting in their best shooting half of the season as they shot 50% from the field on 10 of 20 shooting taking an eight point lead into the halftime break. From downtown they shot 62% converting on five of eight. The Red Hawks also capitalized on the Skylights 16 turnovers, scoring 17 points off of those turnovers. They were led by Bekah Eppler in the half who scored 10 points and had six rebounds. Nichole Jones also contributed with eight points in the half.
The second half started with the Skylights cutting the Red Hawk lead to just one point with 13:19 to play in the game led by Laramie Schwenke. The teams would battle it out for a few minutes and Skylight guard Nikki Tresch's layup would tie the score at 51-51 with 9:25 to play. The Skylights would continue their run with with a Tresch 3-pointer and a Kylee Denham basket giving them a 5 point lead with 5:15 to play, 51-56. The Red Hawks were not discouraged and fought their way back into the lead led by Ariassa Wilson who's hard work on the defensive end turned into points for the Red Hawks. The Red Hawks would hold on for a one point victory, 67-66.
Ariassa Wilson led all Red Hawks in scoring with 15 points. Eppler finished with 10 points and 7 rebounds. Jones was also in double figures for the Red Hawks with 12 points. The Skylights had three players in double figures including Tresch with 17 points, Schwenke with 13 points and Jordan Bruursema who had 11 points and five rebounds.
The win brings the Red Hawks' record to 4-8 on the season. They will try and make it two in a row tomorrow night as they conclude their participation in the Griffin Classic when they will play the host Griffins from Westminster College. Tip off at 4 pm MST/3 pm PST.
