Lady Red Hawks can't digg out

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The Red Hawks women's basketball team started their involvement in Griffin Invitational on Thursday which is a three day event for the Red Hawks hosted by the Griffins from Westminster College. The opponent for the Red Hawks on opening day was the Diggers from Montana Tech who cruised to a comfortable win over the Red Hawks, 74-56.
The Red Hawks got of to a slow start as the Diggers came out guns blazing, jumping out to a 14-1 lead with 11:36 to play in the first period. Digger guard Dannielle Devenny scored nine of those 14 to stretch out the big lead early on. The Red Hawks did not score from the field until 8:19 left in the period when Tempest Dawson hit a three-point basket. The Diggers offense was too much for the Red Hawks to handle as they had cutters getting to the basket uncontested and the Red Hawks poor shooting also allowed the Diggers to stretch out their lead to 24 points at the halftime break, 42-18. The Red Hawks' sloppy ball handling was an issue again in the first half as they turned the ball over 12 times and only converted 19% of their shots from the field.
In the second half the Red Hawks were able to shave some of the lead away from the Diggers but it wasn’t enough as the Red Hawks ended up falling by 18 points, 74-56. The Red Hawks only converted 25% from the field, going 16 of 64 compared to the 43% the Diggers were able to convert (29 of 67 shooting). The Red Hawks were also out-rebounded 54 to 37, which was another factor in the loss for the Red Hawks.
Kelsey Dewitt who had 18 points and eight rebounds led the Diggers offensively. Devenny finished the night with 17 points, 8 rebounds and three steals. The offensive leader for the Red Hawks was Bekah Eppler who had 22 points, 9 rebounds and three steals. Tempest Dawson and Nichole Jones were also in double figures with 13 and 12 points respectively.
The loss drops the Red Hawks' season record to 3-8. They will be in action again on Friday afternoon looking to rebound from this loss quickly when they take on the Montana State University Northern Skylights. Tip off is at 4 pm MST/3 pm PST.
