Lady Red Hawks open conference play with win over PUC

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University's women's basketball team opened their regular season play against the visiting Pacific Union Pioneers on Thursday, January 6. The Lady Red Hawks defeated Pacific Union College 85-61.
In the first half, the Lady Pioneers took an early 10-6 over the Lady Red Hawks. Junior Kayla Rackley entered the game and scored 10 straight points giving the Lady Red Hawks a 16-10 lead. Simpson would go into half with a nine point lead (45-36).
Simpson came out strong in the second half limiting Pacific Union to just three points for 13 minutes in the second half. The Lady Red Hawks outscored the Pioneers 40-25 in the second half and earned the victory 85-61.
Freshman Nichole Jones lead Simpson with 23 points, four steals and nine rebounds. Fellow freshman Bekah Wofford contributed 20 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Rackley followed with 17 points, six rebounds, and six steals.
The Lady Pioneers had three players in double-figures. Lara Canders and JoAnn Mauries each had 13 points. Mauries also pulled down 10 rebounds to give her a double-double for the game. Vanessa Felder scored 10 points.
The Lady Red Hawks return to action on Thursday, Jan. 13 against California Pacific Conference rival William Jessup in Rocklin, Calif. Tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
