Simpson University Sports News
Bellingham, Washington- The Red Hawks Women's basketball team were looking to rebound quickly from a embarrassing loss the day before to the hands of Western Washington University in the 15th Annual Lynda Goodrich Classic. They had their chance against Saint Martin's University of Saturday afternoon but again they fell short dropping the game 70-61.
Both teams started the game playing some sloppy basketball as both sides saw their turnover numbers in double figures. The poor offensive play on both ends kept the game close for a big chunk of the half as the biggest lead either team could manage was 5 points. However, with the score tied 20-20 with 6:53 to play the Saints kicked their offense into overdrive as the closed the half on a 20-4 run taking a 40-24 lead into the break. Chelsea Haskey had 13 points in the half for the Saints with Brooke Paulson also contributing 9 points. Bekah Eppler was the high scorer for the Red Hawks in the half scoring 7 points. The Red Hawks had 19 turnovers in the half and shot a dismal 6-24 from the field. Meanwhile, the Saints were able to convert nearly 42% of the shots that they attempted in the half despite turning the ball over 14 times.
The half time break did not cool off the Saints as they continued to hold a large lead for the majority of the half. The Red Hawks would try and mount a furious comeback with with 4:18 to play in the game and trailing by 20. Eppler and Charissa Murakami were the driving force behind the attempt at stealing the victory from the Saints. Tiffany Aaserude and Ariassa Wilson also hit two huge 3's for the Red Hawks to bring them back within 8 but they ran out of time and the Saints held on in the end coming out on top, 70-61. It was Haskey for the Saints leading the way with 22 points and 9 rebounds. She was helped out by Paulson who added 15 of her own and contributing 5 assists. The Red Hawks had good games from Eppler and Murakami who both finished the night with 14 points. Eppler also had 7 rebounds and 3 steals in the losing effort for the Red Hawks.
The loss puts the Red Hawks record to 3-7 on the season.
