Simpson loses away game to Southern Oregon

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University's women's basketball team traveled to Ashland, Ore., to take on Southern Oregon University for the second time this season. Simpson won the first match between these two teams on Tuesday, Nov. 16. The Lady Raiders claimed a 98-65 victory over the Lady Red Hawks on Monday, Jan. 3.

Simpson hung with Southern Oregon in the first half. The Lady Red Hawks were only down 44-36 at halftime. Freshman Bekah Wofford was the leading score at the half with nine points. Junior Charissa Murakami followed with eight points.

In the second half, the Lady Raiders jumped out with an explosive start. Their defense did not allow the Lady Red Hawks to score for four minutes straight. Simpson would make a late 12-2 run, but it wasn't enough to overcome Southern Oregon's lead. The Raiders defeated Simpson 98-65.

Murakami lead Simpson with 19 points, and freshman Nichole Jones poured in 11 points and had two steals. Senior Tiffany Johnson followed with 10 points.

Southern Oregon had six players score in double figures. Alexi Smith had a double-double consisting of a game high 23 points and 10 rebounds. Lindsey Scheffler had 15 points, and Jamie Roupp had 14 points. Kiara Moore had a double-double. She scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Nicole Mawbray and Whitney Scott each scored 10 points.

The Lady Red Hawks start conference play on Thursday, Jan. 6 against Pacific Union College. Tip-off set to start at 5 p.m. at the Heritage Student Life Center.
