Simpson splits series with OIT

MEDFORD, Ore. - The Red Hawks' men's baseball team was in action on Sunday, April 1, finishing off a four game series with doubleheader. It was a high scoring day as the teams split the doubleheader, with the Owls taking game one 18-10 and game two going to the Red Hawks 10-9.
Matthew Hart was on the mound for the Red Hawks in game one, taking on OIT’s Hayden Wolfe. The Owls jumped out early, leading it 7-1 after three innings. The Red Hawks stormed back, scoring four times in the fourth, once in the fifth inning and three times in the sixth inning. The scoring was highlighted by Daveron Ross, who had a grand slam, and Mitch Garcia, who was 4-for-5 on the day with four RBI. The Red Hawks led 9-7 after the top half of the inning. Unfortunately for the Red Hawks, the Owls scored 10 runs in the bottom half of the inning to put the game out of reach. It added up to an 18-10 win for the Owls. Chad Alden got the loss for the Red Hawks giving up eight runs (three earned) on seven hits in three innings of relief. Cody Barrett earns the win for the Owls, giving up just three hits and one run in 3.1 innings of relief. Ross was 3-for-5 with five RBI, including his grand slam.
In game two, the Red Hawks sent Joshua Yachinich to the mound to take on Owl starter Zach Earle. The Owls were all over the Red Hawks early in the second game, scoring three times in each of the first two innings. Joshua Corson scored on a Garcia groundout in the third, making it a 6-1 game in favor of the Owls. The score remained the same until the top of the fifth, when the Red Hawks scored five runs in the inning. Corson started the scoring, when he doubled to score Kris Warner before he scored on a Ross groundout. Alex Araiza followed that up with a two RBI single, and Garett Barnett ended the scoring in the inning with his RBI single which scored Alden to the game up at six runs apiece. The Owls came back with three of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the lead back. The Red Hawks fought back and took the lead in eighth inning, scoring four times highlighted by Phillip Ramos whose double would score three runners. Alden hit an RBI single as well in the inning, scoring Ramos to the Red Hawks a 10-9 lead, which they held on to for the victory. Warner earned the win for the Red Hawks, pitching four innings of relief and allowing just one hit. Neil Emerson got the loss; he pitched 1.1 innings and allowed two runs on two hits. Corson was 4-for-6 with an RBI and two runs scored. Araiza was 3-for-5 with two RBI, and Ramos was 1-for-2 with three RBI and a run scored.
The Red Hawks will be in action on Saturday, April 7, when they take on Patten College at Tiger Field. The Red Hawks are looking to improve on their 18-21 record. It will be a doubleheader, with first pitched scheduled at noon.
