Red Hawks battle against Biola

LA MIRADA, Calif. - Simpson University men's basketball team continued their road trip on Friday, Nov. 2, when they took on the Eagles from Biola University at Chase Gymnasium in La Mirada, Calif. The Red Hawks lost 74-63.

The Eagles opened up an early, yet slim, 11-5 lead with 16:11 to play in the half. They Eagles expanded their lead to as many as 10 points. Zack Zaragoza hit a 3-pointer to give the Eagles a 24-14 lead with 6:44 remaining in the half. However, the Red Hawks chipped away at the lead by going on a 10-2 run. Robert Frank and Dalton Thacker both contributed to the run, but it was Shaquille Jones who cut the lead to two points. Jones hit a 3-pointer and then made a free throw on the next possession to make it 26-24 Eagles with 3:00 left in the half. The Red Hawks tied the game as time expired in the first half, when Guy Varsek hit a 3-pointer to send the teams into the half time break knotted up at 33 points apiece.

The second half was tightly contested as well as. The Eagles led by as many as seven points, but the Red Hawks continued to fight back. Simpson’s Jonnie Washburn hit a three with 4:09 to play in the game to tie it up at 59. It was at that time, however, when the wheels came off for the Red Hawks. The Eagles seized control and finished the game on a 15-4 run led by senior forward David Cline.

Cline would lead all scorers with 32 points. He shot 66.6% (12-of-18) from the field and also pulled down seven rebounds.

Washburn led the Red Hawks with 16 points and five rebounds. Washburn was impressive from long range, as he hit 4-of-5 from behind the arc. Varsek had 12 points and eight rebounds. Thacker finished with 11 points, six assists, three rebounds and two steals in the loss for the Red Hawks.

Next up for Simpson will be the conclusion of their four-game road trip, taking on the Mustangs from The Masters College in Santa Clarita, Calif., at 3 p.m.
