Red Hawks beat Menlo by two in quarterfinals

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University men's basketball team Hawks traveled to Menlo College to take on the Oaks in the quarterfinals of the Cal Pac tournament on Wednesday, Feb 22. It was a close game that went down to the wire, but the Red Hawks were able to pull it out in the end and upset Menlo by a score of 82-80.
The Oaks started the game on a 7-0 run in the first five minutes of the game. The Oaks were able to extend that lead pushing it to 12 points with 7:21 to play in the half. The Red Hawks brought it closer and only trailed by eight at the break (39-31). Keeping the Red Hawks in it was Stephon Thomas, who had 11 points, including 3-for-4 from beyond the arch. ChaRunn Jones led the Oaks with 11 points.
The Oaks held their lead for about eight minutes of the second half before the Red Hawks mounted their comeback. Calvin Smith's runner tied the game at 47 with 11:38 to play in the half.
The Red Hawks took the lead and extended it to as many as eight, but the Oaks’ John Smith hit some huge three's to keep the Oaks with in touching distance. With 36.3 seconds to play and the Red Hawks up five, Jones hit a three and got fouled. He converted the four-point play to make it 75-74. The Oaks sent Nick Dalby to the free throw line; he made both shots to put the Red Hawks up three. Calvin Smith added a free throw before Jones came right back down to hit a three to make it 78-77 Red Hawks’ lead with 23.4 seconds to play. Robert Frank add two free throws, and Bryan Castillo would add one free throw with 6.4 seconds to play, making it 81-77 in favor of the Red Hawks. Jones came down the court to hit yet another three to cut it to a one-point lead with three seconds left. Castillo added one more free throw. The Oaks’ last chance came from Angle who had a three-quarter court shot that fell short. The Red Hawks held on for the two-point victory.
Smith lead the Red Hawks with 26 points. For the Oaks, John Smith was the high scorer with 26, and ChaRunn Jones had 24 points.
The win sets up a tough match-up for the Red Hawks. They take on No. 1 CSU Maritime on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m.
