Simpson blown out on the road by Maritime

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University men's basketball team was hoping that they turned a corner last week with their two-game winning streak. However, it all came crashing down on Saturday, Feb. 4 when they got blown out 90-66 by the Keelhaulers from CSU Maritime.
The Keelhaulers opened the game on a 15-5 run and never looked back in this game. They led by as many as 20 points in the half and took a 19-point lead into the half (45-26). The big story was the rebound totals. The Keelhaulers pulled down seven offensive rebounds, which created a lot of second chance opportunities. Also, the Red Hawk only managed to shoot 37 percent from the field in the half, while CSU Maritime managed to convert on 53 percent.
The second half was never close. The Keelhaulers stretched their lead out to as many as 29 points and eventually won the by 24-points (90-66). The hot shooting didn’t stop for the Keelhaulers as they shot 52 percent in the second half, for a combined 53.7 percent for the entire game.
Kevin Campbell led all scorers with 20 points for CSU Maritime. Ty Houghton and Isaiah Moore both contributed 14 each in the winning effort for the Keelhaulers. Jordan Collins led the Red Hawks with 15 points. Bryan Castillo put in 14, Ian Corella added 11 and Calvin Smith had 10. The Keelhaulers kept reigning Cal Pac Player of the Week Travis Derochowski to four points and four rebounds.
The loss drops the Red Hawks' record to 3-19 on the season and 2-6 in the Cal Pac. Their next game is Thursday, Feb. 9 against the Hawks from Holy Names at 7:30 p.m.
