Simpson can’t gain winning edge over Maritime
Simpson University Sports News
REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University men's basketball team tried to earn their first conference victory on Thursday, Jan. 12 against the CSU Maritime Keelhaulers. CSU Maritime won 73-61.
The first half started out with the Keelhaulers in control of the tempo slowly building a lead to double figures. With around seven minutes to play in the half, the Red Hawks battled back mainly behind the great shooting from Nick Dalby. The Red Hawks led late in the half, but the Keelhaulers took a two-point lead into the break (29-27).
The second half was very similar to the first. The Keelhaulers were able to slowly build their lead back up to nine points midway through the half. The Red Hawks made a couple surges in the half, but every time the momentum seemed like it might switch into Red Hawks’ favor the Keelhaulers came up with a big play to stop it. The Red Hawks tried to get back the lead by playing the foul game, but it only put the excellent free throw shooting of the Keelhaulers on display. Maritime extended their lead even further and it topped out at 12 points with a final score of 73-61.
Keelhauler guard Isaiah Moore led all scorers with 18 points. He was helped out by Josh Greenwell and Isaiah Johnson who each added 12 points. The Red Hawks offensive leader was Bryan Castillo with 16 points. Other Red Hawks in double figures included Dalby with 14 points and Justin Phillips with 10.
The loss puts the Red Hawks record to 1-15 on the season and 0-2 in the Cal Pac. They look to get into the win column on Saturday, Jan. 14 when they will travel to Oakland to take on the Hawks from Holy Names University at 4 p.m.
