Simpson University Sports News
ATHERTON, Calif. - Simpson University men's basketball team kicked off their Cal Pac conference schedule against the Oaks from Menlo College on Thursday, Jan. 5. The Red Hawks were on the wrong end of a heartbreaker losing by one point. The Red Hawks had the game under control late but were not able to hold on and lost the game 74-73.
The first half was a tightly contested affair with the Red Hawks jumping out to a small lead early. The Oaks reeled the Red Hawks back in, and the teams played evenly for the majority of the half. Calvin Smith led the Red Hawks in the half with eight points. Travis Derochowski, Bryan Castillo and Justin Phillips all had seven points in the half, helping the Red Hawks take a 31-30 lead into the halftime break. Tim Tatum led the Oaks 14 points in the half.
The second half was very similar to the first half because neither team was able to gain control of the game. However, the Red Hawks were able to open up a seven-point lead with 11:34 to play. The Red Hawks were able to continue to press the tempo and Derochowski’s free throw line jumper put the Red Hawks up by 10 with under five minutes to play. The Oaks and Tim Tatum were not ready to give up. He made a basket to bring the Oaks within six points with just over a minute to play in the game. The Red Haws seemed to have the game under control as they led by 12 points with 2:30 to play, but the Oaks played the fouling game for the rest of the game and they hit some huge threes in the final minute. Then with 4.3 seconds to play and the Red Hawks up by one, Simpson was charged with an offensive foul that put Oaks guard Alexander Engel at the free throw line. Engel hit both of his free throws to put the Oaks up by one. The Red Hawks had to travel the length of the floor in 4.3 seconds. Smith’s three-point attempt was just off and the Oaks stunningly pulled out the 74-73 win.
Derochowski led Simpson in scoring with 17 points. Phillips added 16 while Castillo and Smith were also in double figures with 15 and 11 respectively. Tatum led all scorers with 24 points and 14 rebounds for the Oaks.
The Red Hawks season record falls to 1-13 and 0-1 in conference play. They will be in action again on Saturday, Jan. 7 when UC Santa Cruz comes to town in a departure from their conference schedule. The game will tip off at 7:30 p.m.
