Red Hawks win second game in a row
Simpson University Sports News
REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University men's basketball team took to the court on Saturday night trying to avenge a heartbreaking loss that they suffered against Menlo College earlier this season. This time the Red Hawks were able to beat the Oaks 56-52.
The Red Hawks jumped out to an early four-point lead, but Menlo fought back to lead by as many as seven points midway through the half. However, the Red Hawks followed the lead of Ian Corella and came right back to take a four-point lead at halftime (25-21).
The second half was very closely contested with the Red Hawks leading most of the way. They extended their lead out to seven and seemingly took control of the game. However, Oaks' guard Carlos Monroy scored five unanswered points to bring them back within two with 19 seconds to play. The Red Hawk were determined not to let another breakdown happen to them. Calvin Smith iced the game making two free throws to secure the 56-52 victory.
Bryan Castillo led the Red Hawks with 14 points, and Travis Derochowski also had a good night with 10 points and nine rebounds. Corella finished with 11 points and seven rebounds. The Oaks, who struggled from the field shooting only 30 percent, were led by CJ Jones, who had 14 points.
The Red Hawks now are owners of a two game winning streak, putting their season record at 3-18 and 2-5 in the Cal Pac. They will look to keep it going as they will travel to play the Keelhaulers from CSU Maritime on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 7:30 p.m.
