Red Hawks win close game against UC Merced

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University men's basketball team took to the court against the Bobcats from UC Merced on Thursday, Feb. 16. The Red Hawks won 76-70.
In the first half, the Bobcats jumped out to an eight-point lead, as they opened the game with a 10-2 run. The Red Hawks responded quickly and took the lead with 13:30 to play in the half when Calvin Smith's runner made it 11-10. The momentum shifted all the way to the Red Hawks’ favor when Nick Dalby's 3-pointer made it a 10-point game with 5:36 to play in the half. After that, turnovers by the Red Hawks let the Bobcats back into the game. The Red Hawks had a six-point lead at the break (38-32).
In the second half, the Red Hawks still could not take good care of the ball. The Bobcats tied the game at 42 with 15:42 to play. Both teams traded baskets for about 10 minutes. The Red Hawks eventually opened a small lead and were able to hold on for the six-point win (76-70).
Smith led the Red Hawks with 21 points. Dalby added 14; Ian Corella had 13 points and five rebounds; and Bryan Castillo finished with 10 points and five rebounds. Aki Chambers led all scorers with his 27 points in the losing effort for the Bobcats.
The win puts the Red Hawks’ record at 5-20 and 4-7 in the Cal Pac. They will finish up their regular season schedule on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 8:30 p.m. against the Pioneers from Pacific Union.
