Second half surge lifts Red Hawks over San Diego Christian

EL CAJON, Calif. - Simpson University men's basketball team continued their four-game road trip on Thursday, Nov. 1, when they took on the Hawks from San Diego Christian College at the Ryan Athletic Center in El Cajon, California. The Red Hawks were able to secure the 95-89 victory.
San Diego Christian came out strong and proved to be a difficult opponent for the Red Hawks to contain, as they started the game on a 9-2 run. A couple of big shots from Dalton Thacker brought the Red Hawks within three points, but San Diego Christian was able to stretch their lead back out to eight points when Kevin Dawson hit a 3-pointer with 7:05 remaining in the half. San Diego Christian maintained an eight-point lead until 1:14 remained in the half. They then added to their lead by closing out the half on an 8-0 run, which included 3-pointers from Rapahel Rodriguez and Kwaminique Brandon, to send the Red Hawks in to the half down by 16 points.
The Red Hawks regrouped at the break, came out strong and began to chip away at San Diego Christian's lead. They were able to cut their deficit down to just five points with 5:31 left in the half. That was when Red Hawk junior Guy Varsek took over the scoring. He scored a layup while getting fouled and converted the ensuing free throw. He then stole the ball from Dawson and scored another layup to erase San Diego Christian's lead and tie the game at 79 with 5:13 to play. San Diego Christian regained a narrow lead and held on to it until Varsek hit a 3-pointer with 28 seconds left in the game to give the Red Hawks their first lead of the game at 91-89. Varsek then added four more points from the free throw line to seal the incredible come-from-behind win.
Varsek led all scorers with 26 points; he also had three assists and three steals. He shot 57.1% (8-of-14) from the field and hit 8-of-10 shots from the charity stripe. Thacker also contributed big in this one, as he added 22 points to go along with four assists. Jonnie Washburn added 15 points, while Jordan Collins (13 points) and Ian Corella (12 points) also scored in to double figures in the win for the Red Hawks.
For San Diego Christian, Rodriguez, Brandon and Dawson were the leaders; they all scored 18 points in the losing effort.
The Red Hawks now travel to La Mirada, Calif., to take on the Eagles from Biola University at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2.
