Simpson University Sports News
MERCED, Calif. - Simpson University men's basketball team was in action on the road on Saturday, Jan. 21 against the Bobcats from UC Merced in the teams’ bid to get its first win in conference play. The win would have to wait as the Bobcats took the game by 11 points (77-66).
The first half was close as the Red Hawks would trail by one point going into the break (32-31). The Bobcats were encouraged, however, as they only shot 24 percent from the field in the half and still led.
In the second half, the Bobcats offense was aided by the sloppy play of the Red Hawks, who turned the ball over 23 times in the game. Bobcat guard Aki Chambers led all scorers on the night with 25 points. Javon Barrino added 15 points, and Anthony Shepard poured in 14 points for the Bobcats. As for the Red Hawks, it was Stephon Thomas who led the way with 19 points, and Ian Corella was close behind with 17 points.
The loss puts the Red Hawks’ record at 1-18 on the season and 0-5 in the Cal Pac. They look to get that first win in the Cal Pac on Thursday, Jan. 26 against the Pioneers form Pacific Union College in a road game at 7:30 p.m.
