Simpson loses to UC Santa Cruz at home

REDDING, Calif. - Simpson University men's basketball team played UC Santa Cruz at home in a non-conference game on Saturday, Jan. 7. The Banana Slugs came away with the 86-77 victory.
The first half saw the Red Hawks and the Banana Slugs play a tight game with neither team able to really grab control of the game. The Red Hawks had the lead the whole half and led by as many as seven. They were sparked by some great bench play from Nick Dalby and Tony Moore. However, the Banana Slugs kept it close and only trailed by four at the break.
The second half started out much like the first half with both team trading baskets. There were 13 lead changes in the half. With 12:35 left in the game, the Banana Slugs seemed to buckle down a little bit more than the Red Hawks and they slowly started to stretch out a lead. With 11:30 to play, the Banana Slugs’ led by six and increased the lead to 10 with 6:25 to play in the game. They managed to extend their lead to as many as 15 points and were never really threatened. The Red Hawks chopped the lead down to single digits losing by nine (86-77).
The Red Hawk were led by Dalby, who finished the night with 24 points. Stephon Thomas was the only other Red Hawk to get into double figures with 14 points. As for the Banana Slugs, it was Tyler Hunt who was the back bone of the offense; he finished the night with 18 points. Four other Banana Slugs were in double figures including Samuel Allen with 12, Jamien Jones with 11, Brent Jacobs with 13 and Spencer Wells with 13.
The loss puts the Red Hawks’ record at 1-14. They will get back to their conference schedule on Thursday, Jan. 12 when they host the Keelhaulers from CSU Maritime at 7:30 p.m.
