Simpson loses in first round of playoffs to Embry-Riddle

VALLEJO, Calif. - The Red Hawks men’s soccer team as in action on Friday, Nov. 9, when they traveled to Vallejo to take part in the inaugural Cal Pac soccer playoffs. The Red Hawks the No. 4 seed in the four-team tournament, so they faced off against the No. 1 Embry-Riddle Eagles from Prescott, Arizona. The Eagles scored early and never look back, securing a 4-0 win and a place in the final.
The Eagles scored six minutes into the match, when Jacob Brech was able to walk right through the Red Hawk defense and slide the ball past Red Hawk goalkeeper Justin Webb to make it 1-0. In the 27th minute, Brech scored again off an assist from Gage Palmer. Ten minutes later Ryan Holt made the game 3-0, when his attempt at a cross drifted into the upper corner of the net and caught the Red Hawks off guard.
In the second half, the Eagles would get a break early in the half, when Isaac Sanchez converted a penalty kick in the 50th minute to give them a 4-0 lead. The Red Hawks then buckled down on defense and neutralized the Eagle attack with some outstanding keeping from Webb, who finished the match with nine saves. The Red Hawks had a few chances of their own late in the half, including a great opportunity when Tim Mederios forced a great save from Eagle keeper Joan SanMarti.
The loss gives the Red Hawks an abrupt end to the season. They finished second place in the Cal Pac North with a 5-2-1 record.
