Red Hawks win close game against Maritime
Simpson University Sports News
REDDING, Calif. - The Red Hawks men’s soccer team took to the field on Saturday, Oct. 20, against the Keelhaulers from CSU Maritime. The Red Hawks came away with the 1-0 victory, which was enough to put them in second place in the Cal Pac North.
The Red Hawks got on the board early, when Jordan Daigre scored on a play that involved teammate Nate Butterfield in the 10th minute. Butterfield got in behind the Keelhauler defense and his shot went through the legs of keeper Kyle Carpenter, which allowed Daigre to put the ball in the back of the net to make it 1-0 Red Hawks. Just five minutes later, the Keelhaulers were creating chances of their own. Thomas Hernandez shot a ball destined for a goal, but Red Hawk goalkeeper Justin Webb made a spectacular save to keep the Red Hawks in the lead. Keelhauler captain Marshall Fice had a shot in the 42nd minute, which forced Webb to come up big again for the Red Hawks. In the second half, neither team was terribly threatening, and the game ended in a 1-0 Red Hawks victory. Webb finished the day with five saves, earning him man of the match honors.
The Red Hawks will now look to carry the momentum from this win into their game on Tuesday, Oct. 23, against the Warriors from William Jessup down in Rocklin, Calif.
