REDDING, Ore. - The Red Hawks men’s soccer team opened up their home season in impressive fashion on Wednesday, Sept. 5, against the Owls from Oregon Tech. Simpson beat OIT 3-1 for their first win of the season.
The Red Hawks got the scoring started in the first half, when senior Jordan Daigre scored off Marvin Delgado's free kick in to the danger area. Later in the half, Daigre was again giving the Owl defense fits as he was fouled in the box and the referee would award the Red Hawks a penalty kick. Cody Garrison stepped up take the penalty, which was initially saved by Oregon Tech goalkeeper Loren Jessen. Garrison, however, reacted quickly and put in the rebound to make it 2-0 as the teams headed into the half time break.
In the second half, the Red Hawks continued to attack the Owl goal and they went up 3-0 when Nate Butterfield put away a goal midway through the second half. The Owls got on the broad late in the half, when Ashton Betts score directly from a corner kick to make it 3-1 Red Hawks. The Red Hawks held on to that lead and earned their first win of the season and the first win of head coach Luke Manwaring's Simpson University career.
The Red Hawks are now 1-2 on the season and are looking to carry this momentum into the weekend, when they will travel to Hayward, Calif., to take on former conference rival Holy Names University. The game is on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 6:30 p.m.
