Red Hawks fall in round one of NAIA regional tourney

IRVINE, Calif. - The Simpson University women's softball team was in action on Thursday, May 3, as a part of the Unaffiliated Grouping Softball tournament hosted by the Eagles from Concordia-Irvine University. The tournament includes teams from the Cal Pac, GSAC and Frontier conferences. The Red Hawks were one of two Cal Pac schools involved; the other being William Jessup University. The Red Hawks are the No. 3 seed in the tournament and opened up against the No. 6 seed Hope International University Royals. Unfortunately, the Red Hawks lost 2-1 in eight innings.
The Red Hawks sent Hayley Rodriguez to pitch against Alexis Alonso of the Royals. The Royals scored the game’s first run in the top of the third, when right fielder Breanna Myers doubled down the right field line to start the inning. Rodriguez got the next two batters out, before Royal first baseman Katie Gripp singled up the middle to score Myers and make the game 1-0 Royals after three innings. Alonso continue to pitch effectively and posted zero's all the way through the fifth inning. Then the Red Hawks tied the game at one in the sixth inning, when Aleisha Brown reached on a fielder’s choice then stole second and third. Then, Brooke Quaife singled up the middle to score Brown. With the score tied, the game went into extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Royal’s shortstop Crystal Martin singled to score Kristin Peterson to make it 2-1. Red Hawks center fielder Nicole Hutchins' single to start off the bottom of the eighth, but she never reached home as the Red Hawks fell 2-1.
Rodriguez was hit with the loss, allowing two runs on eight hits in eight innings and striking out eight. Alonso earned the win for the Royals, allowing just one run on seven hits in eight innings of work. Quaife was 2-for-4 with a RBI, while Corrine Alexander and Hutchins both added two hits in the loss.
The loss means that the Red Hawks will take on the Lions from Vanguard University in a must win game on Friday, May 4. The game is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
