Simpson loses twice on day one of San Marcos tourney

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The Simpson University women's softball team played two games on Friday, March 2, in the Cougar Clash hosted by Cal State San Marcos. They started the day against the No. 2 ranked Cougars and dropped a close one 2-1. Then they took on the Eagles from Biola University and lost 3-2 in a game that went nine innings.
Morgan Davis started the game one on the mound for the Red Hawks. She took on Courtney Allen, who was coming off of a perfect game for the Cougars. The Red Hawks took an early 1-0 lead in the first, when Nicki Feuerbach's single scored Aleisha Brown. The Red Hawks held that lead until the final inning, when the Cougars scored two runs. Davis earned the loss, pitching seven innings and allowing two runs on seven hits. Allen earned the win for the Cougars, allowing just one run on six hits in seven innings of work. Feuerbach finished the game 1-for-1 with a walk and an RBI; Nicole Hutchins went 2-for-4 in the game.
In the second game, the Red Hawks’ Hayley Rodriguez started against Sarah Enriquez for the Eagles. The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning and maintained that lead until the Red Hawks tied the game in the sixth inning. Brooke Quaife had an RBI single and Hutchins scored on a Ryan Norton ground out. The game remained tied until the Eagles scored in the bottom of the ninth, when Leslie Larson’s single drove home the game winning run. Rodriguez received the loss, allowing just three runs (two earned) in 8.1 innings of work and striking out nine batters.
The Red Hawks are now 9-13 on the season. They will continue the Cougar Clash on Saturday, March 3, when they play the Cougars again at 11 a.m. before they take on the Athenas from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 1 p.m.
