Red Hawks go 1-1 on day two of Cougar Clash

SAN MARCOS, Calif. - The Simpson University women's softball team went 1-1 on day two of the Cougar Clash on Saturday, March 3. The day started with a 5-3 loss to the host Cougars, before they bounced back and defeated the Athenas from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 9-1.
In game one, Trinity Cuff started for the Red Hawks against Jordan Lamoureux. The Red Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning, when Nicole Hutchins drove in two runs. The Cougars fought back by scoring five runs, and the Red Hawks did not recover. Cuff was handed the loss, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing four earned runs. Lamoureux earned the win, allowing only one earned run in 5.1 innings of work. Hutchins was 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Aleisha Brown went 2-for-3.
In game two, the Red Hawks finally got their offense going by scoring nine times in the first three innings. Brown went 3-for-3 with two RBI and scored twice. Brooke Quaife was also 3-for-3 with two RBI, while Valerie Rodriguez was 1-for-3 with two RBI. Hayley Rodriguez earned the win, allowing just one earned run in five innings of work. Athenas' starter Rebecca Gularte received the loss, allowing nine runs on 15 hits in four innings.
The Red Hawks are now 10-14 on the season. They will be in action Sunday, March 4, when they play two games against the Cougars from Cal State San Marcos. The first game is scheduled for 11 a.m.
