ATHERTON, Calif. - The Lady Red Hawks volleyball team opened their play in the Cal Pac women's volleyball tournament on Thursday, Nov. 8, against the No. 6 Pacific Union Pioneers. The No. 3 Red Hawks comfortably disposed of the Pioneers, beating them in three straight sets (25-16, 25-16, 25-14).
The Red Hawks were led by Jessica Lombardi, who had 11 kills in the win. Sarah Loogman added 10 kills and three aces. Kelly Tycksen contributed 20 assists in the win, and Kirsten Duren had seven kills and 18 assists.
With this win, the Red Hawks advance to the tournament semifinals, where they will take on the No. 2 Embry-Riddle Eagles on Friday, Nov. 9, at 5 p.m. The Red Hawks know what they will be facing, as they have played the Eagles on the road twice this season. The first match-up occurred on August 28, in Prescott, Ariz., where the Eagles defeated the Red Hawks in three straight sets (25-11, 27-25, 25-21). The second match-up came just 10 days later on September 8, in Rocklin, Calif., where the Eagles again won in three sets (25-19, 25-21, 26-24). In both of these match-ups, Eagles’ senior Mahlet Lee gave the Red Hawks fits, as she had a combined 37 kills in the two matches. Lee and fellow teammate Morgan Vieira were named members of the All-Cal Pac first team. The Red Hawks will look to counter with two All-Cal Pac first team members of their own in senior Kirsten Duren and freshman Audrey Green.
On the other side of the bracket, the No. 5 William Jessup Warriors advanced to the semifinals against the host No. 1 Menlo College Oaks. The Warriors were able to take care of the No. 4 UC Merced Bobcats in three sets (25-21, 25-21, 25-23).
