REDDING, Calif. - The Lady Red Hawks volleyball team took to the court to open a new season of Red Hawk athletics on Saturday, Aug. 18, against the Beacons from Northwest Christian University. Unfortunately, the Red Hawks did not get off to the start they wanted. They dropped the match in straight sets (21-25, 24-26, 19-25).
The first set started off with both teams trading points. The Beacons went on a four-point run, which was capped off by a kill from Tami Brown, to give the Beacons a 10-7 lead. The Red Hawks came back with a run of their own and tied the game at 15 on a Jamie Pickett kill. The Beacons were able to pull away late in the set to win 25-21.
The second set started off similarly to the first and was tied at 13 midway through the set. The Beacons went on a run and took a six-point lead (20-14). The Red Hawks clawed their way back into the set by winning the next six points. Red Hawk junior Sarah Loogman had some big kills to help tie the game at 20. The rest of the set was tight as Pickett was able to fight off one set point to tie the score 24, before the Beacons finished off the set by winning the last two points to take the set 26-24.
The Red Hawks jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the third set. The Beacons, however, went on to win the next nine points to take a 10-4 lead. The Red Hawks never really got back into the set, and the Beacons finished off the set and the match with a 25-19 win.
The Red Hawks will look to get their record to 1-1 when they take on Oregon Tech on Wednesday, Aug. 22, at home at 2 p.m.
