Simpson loses home opener in double overtime

REDDING, Calif. - The Red Hawks women's basketball team opened their season on Saturday, Nov. 3, when they hosted the Royals from Hope International University. The Red Hawks lost a double-overtime thriller, 84-82.
The Red Hawks came out looking sharp, as they started the game with a 15-3 run. They seemed to be cruising, as they took a 41-35 lead into half time. The Red Hawks maintained their lead late into the half and led by 10 points with five minutes to play. The Royals, however, were able to slowly chip away at the Red Hawks’ lead and eventually tied the game at 66 points apiece with just 15 seconds to play. Both teams scored 12 points in the first overtime period to send the game in to double overtime with the score tied at 78. In the second overtime period, the Red Hawks only managed to score four points and gave up six points, which sealed their 84-82 loss.
Nichole Jones led the Red Hawks offensively with 19 points, nine rebounds and two steals. Tiffany Aaserude had 15 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Red Hawk freshman Madison Cox had a good debut, turning in a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Hope International’s Brittany Bauman led all scorers with 35, points including 5-of-7 shooting from behind the three point line. Shawna Staves had a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds, and Andrina Rendon poured in 16 points for the Royals.
The Red Hawks will now hit the road for their next three games, starting with Northwest Christian University on Friday, Nov. 9, Rocklin, California at 1 p.m.
