Red Hawks end 2012 with loss to Lumberjacks

ARCATA, Calif. - The Red Hawks women's basketball team were in action for the final time in 2012 when they traveled to Lumberjack Arena to play the Lumberjacks from Humboldt State University on Saturday, Dec. 29. The game didn’t go the way the Red Hawks wanted to end the year, as the Lumberjacks handed them a 92-77 loss.
The Red Hawks held a slight lead at 4-2, when Nichole Jones made a lay-up with 18:41 left to play in the half. The Lumberjacks took control of the lead and the game two possessions later and were able to stretch their lead out to as many as 25 points. They took a 47-22 lead into the break.
In the second half, the Lumberjacks picked up right where they left off. They opened up a 32-point lead, when Tiana Maxwell scored to make it 56-24 with 17:12 to play in the game. The Red Hawks didn’t get discouraged by the score and continued to fight. They were able to cut into the lead with strong performances from Jones and Ariassa Wilson. The Lumberjack lead was cut down to eight points (81-73), when Kaitlin Weckerle hit a three with 3:13 to play in the game. However, the Lumberjacks were able to regain control and held on for a 15-point win (92-77).
Lisa Petty led the Lumberjacks with 29 points. Elle Anderson added 18 points in the win.
The Red Hawks will look to get back to winning when they kickoff 2013 on Wednesday, Jan. 2, when they start a Southern California road trip against San Diego Christian.
