Red Hawks lose close game on the road

EUGENE, Ore. - On Tuesday, Nov. 27, the Red Hawks women's basketball team took on the Beacons from Northwest Christian University for the second time this year. The first time these two teams met, the Beacons came away with the 66-52 victory. Unfortunately, the Red Hawks lost the second game, even after leading by as many as 14 points. The Beacons came out on top 68-61.
In the first half, the two teams seemed to be evenly matched. With 7:21 remaining in the half, the Red Hawks only held a 21-20 lead. Then the Red Hawks went on a 19-6 run to take a 40-26 lead with 1:55 to play in the half. The run was sparked by some great play from Kaity Hahn and Nichole Jones. The Beacons hit a 3-pointer before the half to cut the Red Hawks’ lead to 11 points to give Simpson a 40-29 halftime lead.
The second half began with the Beacons going on a 19-6 run. They cut Simpson’s lead to one with 10:40 to play (46-45). Just seconds later, the Beacons grabbed their first lead of the game, when Tami Brown converted a Hahn turnover into two points to give the Beacons a 49-48 lead with 10:02 to play. The momentum shift was too much for the Red Hawks to deal with, as the Beacons extended their lead to as many as 10 points. They eventually won by seven points (68-61) and outscored the Red Hawks 39-21 in the half.
Lindsey Shearer led all scorers with 25 points for the Beacons. Katie Collins contributed to the win with 14 points.
Jones led the Red Hawks with 21 points, five rebounds, four assists, four blocks and seven steals. Kaila Smith added 13 points and three rebounds, and Red Hawk freshman Madison Cox grabbed 11 rebounds and scored six points.
Up next for the Red Hawks is a home game on Friday, Nov. 30, against CSU San Marcos at 6 p.m.
