Women’s Basketball Notes: SU hosts New Hope Christian on Thursday, Dec. 20

THIS WEEK - The Red Hawks women's basketball team (4-9, 0-0 Cal Pac) will host New Hope Christian (8-12) on Thursday, Dec. 20, before heading to Christmas break. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
ABOUT NEW HOPE CHRISTIAN: This is New Hope Christian’s first year having a women’s basketball program. The Deacons participate in NCCAA II. So far this season, New Hope has defeated NAIA I Lewis and Clark State, Cal Pac conference member CSU Maritime and NAIA I Hope International. Warner Pacific College defeated the Deacons 72-60 on Tuesday, Dec. 11. Junior Chelsea Dyson was the leading scorer with 20 points, and junior forward Deanna Tupai had 18 points and nine rebounds. This is the first meeting between Simpson and New Hope Christian.
LAST WEEK: Simpson traveled to the Northwest (Washington, Oregon) to participate in the St. Martin’s/Bud Bay Classic. The classic included Dominica University, Northwest Nazarene and the host team St. Martin’s. Simpson played St. Martin’s in game one on Friday, Dec. 14, and lost 56-47. Senior Ariassa Wilson had 14 points and 13 rebounds, which was her second double-double of the year. In game two, Northwest Nazarene defeated the Red Hawks 95-55. On Monday, Dec. 17, the Red Hawks concluded their Northwest stint by defeating Western Oregon 77-74. Wilson led the team with 17 points.
THE NUMBERS: : Junior Nichole Jones is ranked first in total steals (156) in the NAIA. She is also ranked fourth in steals per game (3.8). Junior Tiffany Aaserude is ranked 29th in three pointers made (29) in the NAIA. Simpson as a team is ranked 15th in total steals (156) and 19th in steals per game (12). The Lady Red Hawks are also ranked 23rd in free throw percentage (71) in the NAIA. Jones leads the team in scoring (15ppg) and steals (3.85). Wilson leads the team in rebounds (7.4) and assists (2.5).
LOOKING AHEAD: The Lady Red Hawks return to action Saturday, Dec. 29, against Humboldt State University in Arcata, Calif. They then head to Southern California on Jan. 2-5 to play CSU San Marcos, San Diego Christian, Westmont, and The Master’s College.
