REDDING, Calif. - The Red Hawks women's basketball team took to their home court on Saturday, Jan. 21 against the Banana Slugs from UC Santa Cruz in a non-conference match-up. It turned out to be a frustrating game for the Red Hawks; they lost 68-58.
The game was very physical, and both teams struggled on the offensive end. The Red Hawks shot 25 percent from the field, and the Banana Slugs only managed to convert on 28 percent of their shots. There were five ties and five lead changes in the half. The Red Hawks had the largest lead of the half, which was 5 points. The Banana Slugs cut Simpson’s lead to two at the break (45-43). Charissa Murakami led the Red Hawk offense with eight points. The Banana Slugs got 10 points and six rebounds out of their main threat Sarah Mackey.
In the second half, the Red Hawks opened their lead to seven points, but the Banana Slugs came storming right back to take the lead and even hold a lead of as many as 13 points. Mackey was the key player again for the Banana Slugs. It seemed like the Red Hawks had no answer for her. Nichole Jones made things interesting late in the game when she stole the ball and finished to cut the lead to just six points with 1:37 to play. The Banana Slugs, however, closed the game out well and won by 10 (68-58).
Mackey led all scorers with 26 points in the winning effort for the Banana Slugs. Murakami led Simpson with 16 points. Bekah Eppler added 14, and Ariassa Wilson had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
The loss drops the Red Hawks’ season record to 5-14. They return to Cal Pac play on Thursday, Jan. 26 in Angwin, Calif., against the Pacific Union Pioneers at 5:30 p.m.
