Men’s Basketball Notes – Simpson vs Maritime and PUC

THIS WEEK: The Simpson University men's basketball team (7-18, 2-4 Cal Pac) will host CSU Maritime (19-5, 5-2 Cal Pac) on Thursday, Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. and Pacific Union College (3-19, 1-5) on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 8:30 p.m.
LAST WEEK: The Red Hawks fell to conference rival William Jessup University (61-58). Dalton Thacker recorded 19 points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Guy Varsek followed with 12 points and seven rebounds.

ABOUT CSU MARITIME: The Keelhaulers went 1-1 last week, defeating UC Merced (74-67) and then losing to Menlo (67-66). In the last meeting between the Red Hawks and Keelhaulers, the Keelhaulers defeated Simpson 72-66. Maritime is ranked No. 7 in field defense (39 percent) in the NAIA, No. 8 in total defensive rebounds (30.5), No. 13 in scoring defense (62.7), No. 15 in free throw percentage (72 percent), and No. 16 in total rebound margin (5.33). Keven Campbell leads the team in scoring (13.5). Jaquai Wiley leads the team in steals (1.46) and assists (2.25).
ABOUT PACIFIC UNION: The Pioneers went 1-1 last week, defeating Menlo (76-56) and losing to UC Merced (86-70). In the last meeting between Simpson and Pacific Union, the Red Hawks defeated the Pioneers 78-67. The Pioneers are ranked No. 16 in defensive rebounds per game (28.14) and No. 16 in total rebounds (40.28). Will Bell leads the team in scoring (11.91) and assists (1.9). Ben Vincent leads the team in rebounds (5.95).
THE NUMBERS: The Red Hawks ranked No.17 in the nation in field goal defense (40 percent), No. 19 in total offensive rebounds (987), No. 20 in defensive rebounds per game (27.615), and No. 27 in three-point field goal percentage (31 percent). Varsek is ranked No. 17 in total 3-pointers made (65), and sophomore forward Ian Corella is ranked No. 38 in the nation in field goal percentage (53 percent).
LOOKING AHEAD: Next week, Simpson men’s basketball travels to UC Merced on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 5:30 p.m. and Menlo College on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 7:30 p.m.
