Men's Basketball Notes: SU begins Cal Pac play

THIS WEEK: The Simpson University men's basketball team (4-14) starts conference play at home against Menlo College (Jan. 10) and UC Merced (Jan. 12).
LAST WEEK: The Red Hawks split a two-game series against Walla Walla University last week. They lost game one 83-68 and then defeated the Wolves 64-60 in game two. Jordan Collins led the Red Hawks in scoring with 14 points in game one. In game two, Guy Varsek had a monster of game, scoring 21 points and going 5-of-8 from behind the 3-point line.

ABOUT MENLO: Menlo enters conference play with a 4-11 overall record, picking up wins in their last two wins against La Sierra (75-60) and UC Santa Cruz (85-71). Junior forward Keith Bowman leads the Oaks in scoring (13.4) as well as rebounds (6.47). Senior guard ChaRunn Jones leads the team in assists (2.25), and junior guard Charles Barnes leads the team in steals (1.53).
ABOUT UC MERCED: Second year program UC Merced enters Cal Pac with a 1-16 record. They earned their first win against La Sierra (90-80) on Sunday, Jan.6. Senior guard Aki Chambers leads the Bobcats in scoring (20), rebounds (6.06) and steals (2.12). Freshmen guard Devin Fountain leads the team in assists (1.59).
THE NUMBERS: The Red Hawks rank 42nd in the nation in 3-pointers made (122). They are also ranked 37th in the nation in field goal defense (41 percent). Varsek is ranked 39th in total 3-pointers made (41), and sophomore Jonnie Washburn is ranked 43rd in the nation in total 3-pointers made (40). Sophomore forward Ian Corella is ranked 44th in the nation in field goal percentage (53 percent).
LOOKING AHEAD: Simpson men’s basketball will head on the road and face Cal Pac rival William Jessup on Thursday, Jan. 17, and then head home for their last non- conference game against La Sierra on Sunday, Jan. 20.
