Red Hawks start season with loss to Southern Oregon
Simpson University Sports News
ASHLAND, Ore. - The Simpson University men’s basketball team started their 2013-2014 season by traveling to Ashland, Ore., to play number No. 4 Southern Oregon University on Monday, Nov. 4. The Red Hawks lost their season opener 128-95.
The Red Hawks started the game well. Junior Ian Corella put the first two points on the board for Simpson by knocking down two free throws in the first minute of the game. Offensively, the Red Hawks were led by former Cal Pac Freshman of the Year, Dalton Thacker, and Simpson was able to stay within five points of Southern Oregon. With six minutes left in the half, the Raiders pulled away and ended the half with a 62-45 lead.
In the second half, the Red Hawks struggled to close the gap, as Southern Oregon’s guards continued to knock down shots. Simpson continued to score, but it wasn’t enough and the Raiders earned the 128-95 victory.
“Being our first game, it was our first opportunity to get a good look at what we need to work on,” said Thacker. “Improving our defense will be our main focus in film and practice and we hope to have a complete turnaround against Northwest Christian. Offensively we saw some great things. Ninety-five points should be enough to win games, but we won’t win games unless we make changes to our defense.”
Thacker ended the game with 19 points, five assists and was among six players who ended in double digits for the Red Hawks. Marc Kirkland finished with 18 points, Amon Schenk had 12 points, Jonnie Washburn and Anthony Williams both finished with 11 points and Shaquille Jones had 10 points.
The Red Hawks will look to find their first win in their home opener against Northwest Christian University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 6.
