Simpson loses on the road to conference rivals

ROCKLIN, Calif. - Simpson University men's basketball team traveled to take on their rivals the Warriors from William Jessup University on Thursday, Jan. 17. It didn’t go the way the Red Hawks hoped, as the Warriors came away with the 77-62 victory.

The Red Hawks led in the early stages of the game, when sophomore Jonnie Washburn hit a 3-pointer to give the Red Hawks a 6-2 lead. The Warriors came storming back to take the lead and that momentum carried them to a nine-point lead at the break (32-23). Guy Varsek and Jordan Collins were the leading scorers for the Red Hawks in the half with seven points each.

In the second half, the Red Hawks couldn't put a dent into the Warrior lead. In fact, the Warriors opened up an 18-point lead before finishing the game with a 15-point victory (77-62).

Varsek led the Red Hawks with 12 points and eight rebounds. Ian Corella added 11 points with Collins putting in 10 points in the loss.

Ben Chung led the Warriors with 14 points. Sterling Shells and Jordan Wilson each added 12 points each in the win for the Warriors.

The Red Hawks will look to bounce back on Sunday, Jan. 20, when they host the Golden Eagles from La Sierra University at 4 p.m.
