Men’s Basketball Notes – Simpson vs William Jessup

THIS WEEK: The Simpson University men's basketball team (7-17, 2-3 Cal Pac) faces conference rival William Jessup (7-15, 4-1 Cal Pac) on Saturday, Feb. 2 in the Hawks Nest at 7:30 p.m.
LAST WEEK: The Red Hawks went 1-1 last week, defeating Pacific Union (78-67) and losing to CSU Maritime (72-66).

ABOUT WILLIAM JESSUP: William Jessup defeated Simpson 77-62 in the first meeting earlier this season. Forward Ben Chung led all scores with 14 points and five rebounds. Sterling Shells and Jordan Wilson each contributed 12 points, while Keenan Prince came off the bench and scored 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds. The Warriors are second in the Cal Pac standing (4-1), a game behind CSU Maritime. Wilson leads the team in scoring (14.05) and rebounding (4.71). Marquis Robinson leads the team in assists (2.81), and Prince leads the Warriors in steals (1.52). Currently the Warriors are ranked No.15 in the NAIA in turnover margin (2.386).
THE NUMBERS: The Red Hawks ranked No. 19 in the nation in field goal defense (40 percent), No. 25 in defensive rebounds per game (27.2) and No. 31 in three-point field goal percentage (31 percent). Junior Guy Varsek is ranked No. 24 in total 3-pointers made (58), and sophomore forward Ian Corella is ranked No. 34 in field goal percentage (53 percent).
LOOKING AHEAD: Next week, the Red Hawks host CSU Maritime on Thursday, Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. and Pacific Union College on Saturday, Feb. 9 (Homecoming/Senior Night) at 8:30 p.m.
