Men’s and women’s golf competes at Border Battle

MEDFORD, Ore. - The Simpson University men’s and women’s golf teams traveled to Medford, Ore., to compete in the two-day Border Battle held at Centennial Golf Course on September 29-30.

The women’s golf team finished in third out of five teams, with a team score of 711. The College of Idaho finished first, Corban University finished second, OIT finished fourth, and Menlo College finished fifth. Christina Phelps had the top individual performance for Simpson, coming in eighth (175, +31). Kimmy Berg (178, +34) and Katie Miller (178, +34) tied for ninth place individually. Serena Castillo (180, +36) finished 13th, and Brooke Mejorado (194, +50) finished 18th.

The men’s golf team took fifth place out of five teams. Being down the first day, the Red Hawks produced the second best score on the last day of the tournament with 315 as a team. Nick Lyskin finished first for Simpson, tying for seventh place with a score of (158, +14). Nick Maddalena finished tied for ninth (159, +15), Nick Norgaard finished tied 17th (164, +20), Marcus Mezzano finished tied 23rd (171, +27) and Zion Johnson finished 25th (172,+28).

“Hard work and dedication is the only way we can improve ourselves,” said senior Maddalena, who is also the men’s team captain. “With each tournament comes more experience and experience is always a good thing for a young team.”

Both teams will prepare the Warner PAC on October 7-8 in Portland, Ore.
