Maddalena finishes NAIA tournament play

REDDING, Calif. - Junior Nick Maddalena represented Simpson University at the 62nd annual 2013 NAIA Men’s Golf National Championships on April 14-16. The tournament was held at Creekside Golf Club and was hosted by Corban University and the Cascade Collegiate Conference.
Maddalena finished round one in 49th out of 154 golfers with a score of 76, four over par. He finished the national tournament tied for 72nd place with four other golfers. His set of rounds were 76, 83, and 72 with a total score of 231, five over par. The winners of the tournament had a final score of 212.
“The competition was very tough,” said Maddalena. “If you take the top 10 players from every tournament and put them into one big tournament then you would have the national tournament. There were 156 golfers there that were first class golfers.”
Not only was the high competition something Maddalena had to adjust to, but he also had to adjust to the weather. The first day it was very nice weather with a slight wind but the next two days were very rainy and cold.
“It was very tough to juggle holding an umbrella and keeping dry and still manage to play golf. The ball doesn’t travel as far in the rain either so I had to adjust to that also” he said.
Competing at nationals provided many lessons and memories for Maddalena to take into next year’s golf season.
“I learned that I could play with the big guys as long as I stay loose and not let the pressure get to me,” he said. “I played two fantastic rounds of golf, including tying my career college low in the final round. I gained a lot of confidence from the positive things that I did, and I hope to have my team at the tournament with me next year. I’m very excited for next year and hope we can be more competitive next year.”
