Simpson’s men’s golf team wins home invitational

REDDING, Calif. - The Red Hawk men's golf team hosted the Simpson University Invitational on Monday, April 1 and Tuesday, April 2, at Tierra Oaks Golf Course in Redding, Calif. They secured first place by defeating the Oaks from Menlo College and the Marymount College Mariners.
On day one of the invitational, the weather proved to be a challenge. The golfers had to adjust their playing strategy as they dealt with rain, wind, and some sun.
“With the moisture in the air we had to play shots longer than they actually were,” said junior Nick Maddalena. “The air is always thicker when there is rain in the area. But we didn’t let that affect us.”
Simpson had five golfers competing in the invitational: Maddalena, Kyle Harman, Nick Lyskin, Kerry King, and Marcus Mezzano. Day one ended with the Red Hawks leading with a score of 612, Menlo in second with 652, and Marymount in third with 797.
On Tuesday, the Red Hawks pulled away from the Oaks and the Mariners. Simpson finished strong, as all five of their competitors placed in the first five spots, giving the Red Hawks the victory and a second invitational win for the season.
“Winning always feels good, especially when you win as a team,” said Harman. “It’s a good feeling knowing I contributed to our team win and met my teammates’ expectations because we play for each other.”
Overall, Simpson as a team finished with a score of 917. Menlo finished second with a score of 974, and Marymount finished in third with a score of 1071.
