Red Hawks open season with loss to Corban
Simpson University Sports News
REDDING, Calif. - The Simpson University men’s soccer team opened their season on Saturday, Aug. 24, when they hosted the Corban University Warriors. The Warriors jumped ahead early and never looked back, securing a 5-0 win.
In the early minutes of the game, the Red Hawks showed some opening season jitters and the Warriors took advantage of those nerves. Corban’s Arsinio Walker got in behind the Red Hawk defense and crossed a low hard ball into the path of Kemar Prince, who finished off his first goal of the game with ease in the sixth minute. Prince scored his second goal of the game in the 26th minute after the Red Hawks failed to clear the ball from their box. Warrior forward Josh Hamilton then scored right before the halftime break to make it 3-0 Warriors.
Simpson showed some glimpses of fight, but the Corban attack was just too strong for the Red Hawks. Prince finished off his hat trick in the 58th minute off an assist by James Williamson. Then Red Hawks’ goalkeeper Justin Webb came up with several outstanding saves to keep the scoreline at 4-0. Derik Chaney scored Corban’s final goal of the game in the 70th minute to give his team the 5-0 victory.
The Red Hawks will have to learn what they can from a tough loss against a very good opponent and prepare for more hard-fought battles throughout the season. Simpson starts their California Pacific Conference schedule against the Lions of Soka University at home on Sunday, Aug. 25, with kick off scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
