Beamon, Vega, Lobsinger compete in day one of NAIA Nationals

DES MOINES, Iowa. - Red Hawks Brady Beamon, Anthony Vega and Austin Lobsinger were in action on Friday, March 1, in the first and second rounds of the 56th Annual NAIA Wrestling National Championships held at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines.

Beamon (10-14) took on Steadman Wang (19-17), who was representing the Bronco's from Hasting College in Hasting, Neb., in the first round of the championships in the 165 pound weight class. It was a close match, but Beamon secured the win for the Red Hawks by defeating Wang 3-1 in the overtime period.

The win set up a second round match-up against Jimmie Schuessler (29-3), a freshman from Grand View University Des Moines, Iowa. Unfortunately, Beamon was no match for Schuessler, who won 17-6.

That loss sent Beamon into the loser’s bracket, where he took on Jason Fraser (21-12), a junior from Life University in Marietta, Ga. Beamon was able to handle the Running Eagles junior, winning 6-3 on decision.

That win will set Beamon up a match-up in the evening session against Nick Hutcheson (10-6), a junior from Dakota Wesleyan University.

Vega found himself in the second round after a first round bye, taking on Chris Teague (11-7), a sophomore representing the Tigers from Campbellsville University in the 141 weight class. Teague won 5-3 on decision, sending Vega to the loser’s bracket. Vega will face Nick Schroeder (11-15), a sophomore from Midland University out of Fremont, Neb., in the Friday evening session of the tournament.

After a first round bye, Lobsinger was in action in the second round in the 285 weight class against Grand Valley University Vikings sophomore Eric Thompson (40-5). Thompson made quick work of Lobsinger, pinning him at 1:09.

The loss sent Lobsinger to the loser’s bracket to take on Markese Christian (12-12), a sophomore from Wayland Baptist University. Lobsinger turned his fortunes, this time pinning Christian at 0:42.

This win will set up a match-up against Tyler Kacmarynski (23-5), a junior from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, in evening session of the tournament.
