Simpson loses duals to ‘Lopes and Gators

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The Simpson University men’s wrestling team was in action on Sunday, Jan. 27, when they traveled to take part in duals against the 'Lopes from Grand Canyon University and the host Gators from San Francisco State University. The Red Hawks didn't get the result that they were looking for in either match. They dropped the dual.
The first dual against the 'Lopes was close at the beginning, after 'Lopes sophomore Ryan Miller defeated Richie Ortiz by fall to give the 'Lopes a 6-0 lead in the 157 pound category. Brady Beamon for the Red Hawks answered right back, winning his match at 165 pounds over Juan Carlos Maynes 7-1 to cut the 'Lopes lead in half (6-3). Matthew Tsarnas continued the pace for the Red Hawks, when he won his match (7-4) at 174 pounds over Martin Fabbian to tie the overall score at 6-6. Unfortunately, the Red Hawks failed to score again in the match, and the 'Lopes secured all the points in the remaining seven matches to win 47-6.
In the second duel of the day, the Gators led early and never relinquished control to the Red Hawks. Highlights for the Red Hawks came from Tsarnas, who won his match to by decision (3-0) over AJ Simon to make the overall score 6-3. Austin Lobsinger also scored for the Red Hawks, when he won his match 2-1 on decision over Richard Segovia in the 285 pound weight class to make the score 15-6. Hayden Zimmerman secured six more points for the Red Hawks, when he won his match by forfeit to make the score 15-12. Another late surge by their opponent undid the Red Hawks, with the Gators securing all the points in the remaining three matches to finish off the Red Hawks 33-12.
